Silent Saturday
Friend,
Is it quiet where you are right now?
Are you afraid of quiet?
Do you crave quiet?
Is quiet hard to find?
I tell myself and others how much I love quiet and need it, but when I have even 10 minutes of it, I foolishly try to find things to fill that lull. Why, oh why?
What needs silencing so we can hear the silence? Let’s not be afraid of it, but welcome it. Truth is revealed when it’s quiet. We might have to distinguish and extinguish the lies we’ve been listening to, but truth is revealed in the quiet. Thoughts and emotions we have suppressed rise up again and it’s silent Saturday where we are given time to sit with them, journal them, bring them up with a helpful friend.
I’m making an active choice today to live in silent Saturday. Oh, there will be noise. There will be teenage footsteps barreling down the stairs. Clanging in the kitchen for bowls and spoons. Car after car slowing down or speeding up because of the nearby traffic signal. But inside of me - inside of you - our souls can wait in silence. Hope in silence. Can I pray for us? God, I’m not sure what You were doing on the day between crucifixion and resurrection, but we believe by faith and based on your steadfast love that You were always present. Will You come close to us today? As we have things in our lives that are of suffering, pain, loss, grief, and death, will Your presence be with us? As we have things in our lives that need hope, power, awakening, healing, and joy, will Your presence be with us today? We join You in the silence because of Your Son, Jesus, we pray. Amen.
Shhh,
Shauna
