Eggs or waffles?
Friend,
Ben and I are in London for the Leadership Conference and Alpha. On our flight across the pond, we were served breakfast shortly before we landed.
Attendant: eggs or waffles?
Ben: which one is better?
Attendant: everything tastes the same on an aircraft, sir.
She spoke with such conviction and experience and we laughed with such comic and ease. While everything might taste the same on an aircraft, everything doesn’t taste the same at all of our churches. Why is that? Are we to be the same, but different?
I believe yes. We have the same hope, the same Lord, the same Father of us all, but we are different expressions depending on where we live and with whom we serve.
One leader encouraged us, “don’t be afraid to contextualize in order to communicate so that your community can thrive.”
Each time I’ve visited London since 2016, I‘ve gained inspiration and language to bring home with me. The Church leaders here somehow know how to say what I’m feeling and what we’re sensing in our ministry at home.
Let us celebrate what God is doing in all parts of the world today. He moves where He is welcome and the churches who open up the door to the least of these and to those who are lost and to Jesus Christ Himself will experience the move of God, more of God, moments with God that are hard to express but noticed by those who experience it in real time.
Let us go into our churches and go into God’s presence not feeling like it all tastes the same today. Be open to His presence. Take His presence with you, yes, into the church. That is how we form local bodies of Christ that are different from one place to another…because we’re different and that is much better than same!
We both chose the eggs,
